Message from the President and CEO

There is something inspiring in the way a chamber can make a difference in its community: by fostering a better climate for business, by enlisting companies to help with key local problems, by bringing businesses together to achieve a common goal. Leadership inspires others to do great things and you inspire it personally by your own willingness to work hard. Leaders lead by integrity.

The work our Chamber encompasses a broad range of topic areas that are important to our membership, including economic development, business advocacy, interfaces with all levels of government and an offering of high quality services to individual members. I will work with our Board and staff to maintain and improve the high standards of quality, consistency and relevancy that our members will enjoy for many years.

For the immigrant American Muslim community, the economic development of Muslim immigrants has followed the usual course: in the first stage, the immigrants work as professionals or as skilled or unskilled laborers; later, some open community-oriented businesses (e.g., specialty food stores); finally, they set up other small businesses leading into big business.

Muslim communities, particularly in the bigger cities, are entering the third stage. Muslim entrepreneurs have begun establishing small businesses (other than food stores) and going into garment businesses (wholesale or retail), printing presses, computer software shops, web design, etc. One hopes that there will soon be more Muslim companies in the USA, as the small Muslim businesses grow and more entrepreneurs learn to organize bigger businesses.

In order to be able to establish more Muslim companies in the USA, Muslims must learn to build durable partnerships among themselves. Most failures in business partnerships is that the partners often keep inside their hearts what should be discussed openly. Muslim companies in the USA can establish successful and lasting partnerships when the partners discuss beforehand all their individual obligations and the method of sharing profits. This discussion should be done in a spirit of frankness and trust, and the terms of partnership should be committed to writing. For, as interpreted from the Holy Qur’an:

O you who believe! Whenever you enter into deals with one another involving future obligations for a certain term, write it down. (2:282)

Over the next few months we will develop our Strategic Plan engaging the current board of directors and the membership of the Chamber to ensure we have a relevant and comprehensive long term strategy for the organization.

My goals as President and CEO include:

  • More frequent and effective engagement with business leaders, economic development agencies, post secondary education institutions, and diplomatic missions. By doing so, we can increase our advocacy impact, make noticeable progress on important matters and speak with a common voice;
  • Help staff wherever possible to grow our membership numbers while ensuring each member obtains high value for their investment and trust in the Chamber;
  • Promote increased innovation in how the Chamber interfaces with its members and key stakeholders; and
  • Encourage our board and staff (with the help of members) to proactively plan for the impacts of upcoming province-wide growth opportunities.

As a Chamber of Commerce, AMCC is committed to ensuring that the environment within which we and our members operate is conducive to business development and growth both nationally and internationally. Through our lobbying efforts as a national private sector business organization and our input on Government policies, legislation and social climate, we seek not only to encourage foreign direct investment in the United States but also to encourage the growth of local business. By leveraging the global AmCham network, we are also in a unique position to facilitate the formation of direct links between our members and businesses globally.

Sincerely,
Khalid A. Ahmed
President and CEO
